About

Emanuel Deutschmann is an Assistant Professor of Sociological Theory at the University of Flensburg and an Associate of the European University Institute's Migration Policy Centre. He holds an MSc in Sociology from Oxford University and a PhD (with distinction) in the same field from BIGSSS. His research interests often cut across disciplinary boundaries, covering topics such as transnational mobility and migration, regional integration and globalization, power law structures, and human behavior under uncertainty. He has been a visitor to Princeton University's Global Systemic Risk research community and the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.

Invited talk at GESIS Eurobarometer Symposium

On Friday July 10th 2015, I will give a talk at the GESIS Eurobarometer Symposium Four Decades of Surveying Europe – Perspectives on Academic Research with the European Commission’s Eurobarometer Surveys about our experiences in doing research on transnational activity and European identity with Eurobarometer survey data in the DFG Project Cross-border Interactions and Transnational Identities (PI: Prof. Jan Delhey).

New Article Published in International Sociology

A new article co-authored with Jan Delhey and Katharina Cirlanaru titled Between 'Class Project and Individualization: The Stratification of Europeans' Transnational Activities is now available in the latest issue of International Sociology.

In this article we examine which social groups are most involved in transnational activities such as studying and working abroad, following foreign news, or having friends from other countries, how this varies across European societies and why. One of our findings is that the upper social classes are more transnationally active than the lower ones and that this gap in transnational activity is larger in more affluent countries (see figure on the right).
