About

Emanuel Deutschmann is an Assistant Professor of Sociological Theory at the University of Flensburg and an Associate of the European University Institute's Migration Policy Centre. He holds an MSc in Sociology from Oxford University and a PhD (with distinction) in the same field from BIGSSS. His research interests often cut across disciplinary boundaries, covering topics such as transnational mobility and migration, regional integration and globalization, power law structures, and human behavior under uncertainty. He has been a visitor to Princeton University's Global Systemic Risk research community and the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.

ASA Award for Social Science Research Paper

My article "The Spatial Structure of Transnational Human Activity", published at Social Science Research, will receive this year's Best Publication by an International Scholar Award of the American Sociological Association's Global and Transnational Sociology section. According to ASA, the award "will recognize an outstanding article published in 2015 or 2016 in the area of Global and Transnational Sociology". The award will be presented at the ASA Annual Meeting in Montreal, Canada in August. Previous recipients include Max Haller, Sir Roger Jowell, Tom W. Smith, Min Zhou, Grégoire Mallard, and Monika Krause.

My article "The Spatial Structure of Transnational Human Activity", recently published in Social Science Research, received the BIGSSS Best Paper Award 2016 last Monday. The award, which is offered annually by the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences, was endowed with 500 Euros. I donated the money to Sea-Watch.org, an NGO that works hard to save refugees in distress at sea in the Mediterranean.
