PhD Thesis defended

On Thursday, 12 October 2017, I successfully defended my PhD Thesis Mapping the Transnational World: Towards a Comparative Sociology of Regional Integration. The examination board, consisting of Prof. Dr. Jan Delhey, Prof. Dr. Steffen Mau, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Gerhards, Prof. Dr. Johannes Huinink, Dr. Franziska Deutsch, Dr. Arndt Wonka, and Ms. Nora Waitkus, unanimously decided on a "pass with distinction". I would like to thank everyone involved for their commitment.

Peter Holtz, Henrik Dobewall, and myself have a new paper out. It is titled "Cross-Cultural Psychology and the Rise of Academic Capitalism: Linguistic Changes in CCR and JCCP Articels, 1970-2014" and now published online first at the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology (free open access preprint available here).

The paper shows that during the last decades, scholars in the field of cross-cultural psychology have become more likely to use positive words such as “innovative,” “novel,” and “unprecedented,” to report findings that are only marginally significant, to draw on more complicated language in their articles, and to argue that "more research is needed". We interpret these linguistic changes as self-marketing strategies used to survive in the increasingly competitive climate of academic capitalism.

ASA Award for Social Science Research Paper

My article "The Spatial Structure of Transnational Human Activity", published at Social Science Research, will receive this year's Best Publication by an International Scholar Award of the American Sociological Association's Global and Transnational Sociology section. According to ASA, the award "will recognize an outstanding article published in 2015 or 2016 in the area of Global and Transnational Sociology". The award will be presented at the ASA Annual Meeting in Montreal, Canada in August. Previous recipients include Max Haller, Sir Roger Jowell, Tom W. Smith, Min Zhou, Grégoire Mallard, and Monika Krause.

PhD Thesis submitted

On Monday, 19 June 2017, I submitted my PhD thesis Mapping the Transnational World: Towards A Comparative Sociology of Regional Integration to the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences. Grant from Volkswagen Foundation

Volkswagen Foundation will fund three "BIGSSS Summer Schools in Computational Social Science: Data-Driven Modelling of Conflicts, Migration, and Social Cohesion" in the framework of its call for International Research in Computational Social Sciences. The project is a joint endeavor of Jan Lorenz, Klaus Boehnke, and Adalbert Wilhelm from Jacobs University Bremen (Germany), Andreas Flache from University of Groningen (Netherlands), Francesco Mola from Università di Cagliari (Italy), and myself. The three summer schools will focus consecutively on conflict, migration, and social cohesion and are scheduled to take place in Bremen, Groningen, and Cagliari in 2018, 2019, and 2020, respectively. More information will follow soon.
